Each year, from September 15th through October 15th, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month. The month-long celebration of the history, culture, and
contributions of Hispanic persons in America began in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon B. Johnson. In 1988, President Ronald Reagan expanded the
celebration to the 30 days we observe now. Hispanic Heritage Month begins on September 15th because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries
Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16th and September 18th, respectively.
Northern Chautauqua County has a vibrant Hispanic community that has made countless contributions, helping to shape and enrich our region. We would like to take this
opportunity to recognize Miriam Lugo-Alfaro, Christopher Rodriguez, and Wilfred Rosas, all Voting Members at NCCF. Each has contributed to the enrichment of our community,
making lasting impacts that reach beyond northern Chautauqua County. NCCF is grateful for their involvement.
The Chautauqua Cattaraugus Library System has put together a list of suggested titles and authors to celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month. Find the list here, then visit your local library to check them out!
